What if you were a witch who just wanted to live a normal life with your mortal husband, but your family did not approve? That's what Samantha, played by Elizabeth Montgomery, was trying to do with her husband Darrin Stephens in the TV show Bewitched. Samantha swears off using her powers to become a typical suburban wife, however her family, in particular her mother Endora (Agnes Moorehead) uses every trick and spell in the book to try and subvert her efforts. With a wave her hand or an incantation Endora throws her spells of chicanery, to which, more often than not, her victim is Darren (first played by Dick York, later by Dick Sargent), in an attempt to try and break-up the happy couple. The effects of her antics lead to comical mayhem in the lives of Darren, his family, and his boss Larry Tate (David White). By the end of the show Samantha usually saves the day with a counter spell of her own often times cast by a "twitch" of her nose. Throw in a few other zany characters such as Samantha's absent-minded Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) whose spells often back-fire, her Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde) who loves a good prank, and the nosey neighbor Gladys Kravitz (Alice Pearce, Sandra Gould) and you have the makings of a fun, magical television sitcom.
