Space Invaders! Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, and released in 1978, was one of the earliest, addictive, shoot-em-up arcade games
accepted by the geek masses. The player fired a left-right sliding laser cannon (that only shot straight up) at waves of descending aliens that looked not too much unlike
an attacking virus module. Their were four barriers that would simultaneously act as "defending" blocks to hide behind yet also got in the way, becoming obstacles when
the aliens were closing in. The goal was to shoot each wave of aliens before they made it to the bottom of the screen. The closer they got to the bottom, the faster they would approach,
accompanied with the Jaws like audio "Dun-Dun, Dun-Dun, Dun-Dun.." which would also increase in speed to the point where the player was screaming his guts out
trying to get the last dang alien that is hurtling in at an outrageous speed while he's furiously hitting the laser button with his right hand, "pew, pew, pew, pew."
The game was addictive as hell and it, along with Asteroids, was the cause of many a lunch money being lost after school got out. Damn we miss that game.
