Best 80s Cartoon Villain Poll Results! |
| |
The results of our “Favorite 80s Cartoon Villain”
poll have been tabulated. There were 1857 total votes, and we limited the
voting to one vote per computer.

Our evil line-up included: (Front Row)
Gargamel, Lotor, The Purple Pieman
(Back Row) Hordak, Shredder. Mumm-Ra, Cobra Commander, Megatron, and
Skeletor.
We handpicked our contestants from
our favorite cartoons of the 80s. Naturally, the best villains tended
to be on boy oriented cartoons, but to be fair we threw in a few from girls'
cartoons as well.
We gave the option
for comments and quite a few of you took that opportunity to make write in
votes. Some alternate vote-getters included Juggernaut, Stay Puft
Marshmallow Man (although he rarely appeared in the Ghostbusters cartoon),
the Junkyard Cats from Heathcliff, Starscream (got a couple of votes but
this may be from our employee
Brian who
is way too obsessed with Transformers and Starscream in particular. Brian
thinks Starscream is the better villain because he was scheming to overthrow
Megatron and take control of the Decepticons.)
One person used the
comments to tell us who should be the voice actors for the Transformers
movie coming out next year. I know we are probably one of the top
100,000 most powerful companies in the world, but even we can’t sway that
decision.

Let’s stick to the villains that were actually
on the ballot from now on. The race for last place was quite heated. Hordak and Lotor, Prince of Doom put in an almost equally unimpressive
performance, together gathering less than 2% of the entire vote. I guess
the moral of the story is that She-Ra and
Voltron were whooping up on some
pretty sad villains. |

Gaining an only slightly more respectable 3%
of the vote was the Purple Pieman from Strawberry ShortCake. The fact that
Strawberry ShortCake was an entirely girly show did not help his cause.
Let’s face it, villains and girly shows just don’t go together. |

The next villain on our list is Mumm-Ra The
Everliving from
ThunderCats. He pulled in a paltry 8.4% of the vote. What
was Mumm-Ra missing that the rest of his action hero villain counterparts
had plenty of? Comic relief. Nobody likes a villain who can’t make you
chuckle. |

Taking a slightly higher percentage than Mumm-Ra
was Gargamel with 8.8%. This seems like a relatively impressive showing to
me since Gargamel is a tough sell. He was not particularly funny, and
his only goal was to destroy the Smurfs. Granted he used some pretty
cool ingredients in his potions, but I honestly expected him to finish with
a much lower percentage. |

Now we’re getting to the cream of the crop.
The next four contestants combined for more than 78% of the vote. Cobra
Commander was the laggard of the bunch with a 16.1% take. A few voters
commented that Cobra Commander wasn’t even the best Cobra villain. They
preferred other GI
Joe villains like Destro and Zartan instead. I think if he had shown his
deformed face more often he could have scored some more votes. |

Next on the list was Shredder with a
respectable 18.2% take. Some of the comments indicated that Shredder got
votes because he was on
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, not necessarily
because he was a great villain. Considering that he was a wannabe
Freddy
Krueger/Wolverine he did pretty well for himself. |

Our second place finisher was Megatron with
19.7% of the vote. I have always had issues with Megatron. How does he
transform into a tiny gun from a huge robot? For the people complaining
that Megatron should be a gun in the new
Transformers movie here is what I
say: It won’t look real, so it can’t be done! But in terms of villainess I
have to agree with this one. He was pretty evil, and he did transform. |

And the winner is…. (pause here for dramatic
effect before reading) Skeletor! With slightly more than 24% of the vote
Skeletor won in a landslide. Why is Skeletor the best villain?
Besides the fact that
He-Man was one of the best cartoons of the 80s? Let me
count the ways:
1)
Wears his skull on the
outside
2)
Has a really cool laugh
3)
Hires the freakiest of
freaks whether they are competent or not
4)
Carries a staff
5)
Dates Evil Lynn
