With all the buzz lately
surrounding movies like TMNT and Transformers, we started to
ponder what other 80s cartoons might be destined for the silver screen.
With that in mind, we conducted a poll asking participants which cartoons
they would most like to see made into a live action movie. Over 8,000
people voted, and here are the results: |

Above: Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, She-Ra, and Care Bears.
At the bottom of the pack,
we have four cartoons which each earned less than 6% of the vote.
"Strawberry Shortcake" earned a mere 2.5% and "Rainbow Brite" came in around 4.3%,
while "She-Ra" and the "Care Bears" each earned a little more than 5%. Being
that most of these cartoons were quite saccharine, it is hard to imagine a
live-action version being appealing to anyone over the age of 10. Many
voters commented that it would be difficult to adapt these particular
cartoons into live-action movies (Not to mention the fact that the Care
Bears could end up looking more creepy than cute). Out of the four,
"She-Ra" probably holds the most potential, but the movie would have to be
done very well to pull it off.

Jem and the Holograms |
Next up, we have "Jem and the Holograms" at just
under 9% of the vote. The ultimate 80s pop band, Jem and the Holograms
engaged in adventure, mystery, romance, and rock n' roll--in each 30 minute
installment. Voters who said they'd like to see a Jem movie mentioned
that, if done right, it could really appeal to both the younger crowd and to
those who grew up watching the series. The only concern would be that
if it did not follow the elements of the cartoon, it could end up as just
another lame live action dud like the Josie and the Pussycats movie. |

Some of those who voted for "Voltron" commented that if the Transformers can
have their own movie, so can the Defender of the Universe! The
original cartoon that played in the US was actually a redub of a Japanese
cartoon. In the US version they had to remove much of the violence and
in doing so the storyline often didn't make sense. This actually might
give a Voltron movie a decent shot of not offending fanboys. Since the
story made no sense to begin with it's unlikely anyone would complain if the
movie strays from the cartoon. It was recently announced that a movie
is in the works. Since less than 10% of the visitors to 80sTees chose
this movie as their favorite choice that could spell trouble for the box
office of this movie. |

Many
voters pointed out that
He-Man already appeared in a live-action movie,
Masters of the Universe, starring Dolph Lundgren. While we were
aware of this, the 1987 movie strayed so far away from the cartoon that we
wondered if perhaps a newer and better He-Man movie could make up for it.
With the special effects available in movies today, it's possible we could
see some very convincing He-Man/Skeletor battle scenes. Since the poll
was started a He-Man movie was announced by Warner Brothers!

"Thundercats" was a classic 80s cartoon--and that is quite apparent in this
poll, with nearly a quarter of the votes. Many voters commented that a
Thundercats movie would be highly anticipated, much like the upcoming
Transformers movie. A few people commented that the cats might be
better as 3-D animation rather than a live-action flick. Otherwise, it
could just end up seeming like a cheesy spin-off of the musical Cats.
Those people are going to get their wish since Warner Brothers has announced
a 2010 release for a CGI ThunderCats movie. |

And the winner
is....
...a
real American hero!
There are many possible reasons why "G.I. Joe" received the thumbs-up from
most of our poll-takers, and why it could work as a movie. One factor
is that the G.I. Joe toys have been around since the 60s, appealing to kids
for over four generations. Another reason is that it would likely be
the most convincing and believable out of all the options featured in this
poll. "G.I. Joe" deals mainly with military combat rather than magical powers
or talking animals, so it could easily be translated to the big screen--and
could be something for both young and old to enjoy. Who wouldn't want
to see Cobra in live action on the big screen? |
