Going with the 2006 rewriting of Green Arrow, in Green Arrow: Year One Oliver Queen is a left-leaning, thrill-seeking billionaire who is betrayed by Hackett, his bodyguard turned friend, and is attacked on his yacht. Queen is thrown overboard and ends up marooned on a supposedly deserted jungle island. He manages to make a crude bow and arrow set to help him survive the harsh environment and becomes quite skilled in archery over the months alone on the island. The unforgiving natural environment causes Queen to have a type of catharsis where he learns to treasure things in life he previously took for granted. He also learns that there is a slave run opium growing/ heroin manufacturing & smuggling operation going on on the island. In short, armed only with a Howard Hill's bow and 12 arrows, Queen frees the slaves, defeats the drug organization and turns the drug gang in to the not-so-local authorities. BAM! Green Arrow is born to fight for and defend the down trodden.
