Nothing says nostalgia like an old, forgotten store like Zayre. Before today's big box stores blanketed the planet like small pox there were smaller, regional, discount department stores catering to local communities all over the US. Zayre, which means "very good" in Yiddish, just so happened to be one of those kinda stores. Hell, they even had a Malt Shoppe with a soda jerk waiter! It was founded by 2 Russian brothers, Max and Morris Feldberg, way back in 1956, back when color TV was just catching on, in Massachusetts carving out a strong midwest presence.
But, in 1988, Zayre went bankrupt and sold to the Ames chain which, sadly also went belly up in 2002. Thankyouverymuch Walmart. Megan, our resident anti-corporate manager hates global corporations so much, she wears this juniors Zayre shirt just out of spite. She used to shop at Zayre while listening to her Journey tape on her Walkman cassette player...which she still listens to to this very day. Fight the power Megan!
