During the late 1960s, university students Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Syd Barrett and Richard Wright gained momentum and popularity in London's underground music scene with their garage band Pink Floyd. In 1967 David Gilmour joined the band, just prior to Syd Barrett leaving and with "The Dark Side of the Moon" (1973) Pink Floyd exploded in popularity with their philosophical lyrics, electronic experimentation and elaborate live shows.
Their following albums, "Wish You Were Here" (1975), "Animals" (1977) enjoyed huge success but it was their 11th album (a double album) "The Wall" (1979) a rock opera that centers on the character "Pink" with its themes of abandonment and isolation, that set itself apart from all of their prior works eventually adapted into a feature film, Pink Floyd—The Wall.
