When the US adaptation of The Office premiered in 2005 it introduced Americans to the faux documentary sitcom format. The series documented the antics of the Scranton, PA branch office of a paper company called Dunder Mifflin. Unlike most sitcoms The Office allowed characters to speak and react to the camera. And even more unlike most sitcoms much of the humor is of the "cringe" variety where the viewer manages to feel awkward and uncomfortable because Michael Scott, the regional manager of the Scranton office, is both immature and clueless and therefore acts inappropriately on issues such as race and gender while also needing to be the center of attention.
Besides Michael when the series started the main intrigue was a "will they or won't they" storyline of salesman Jim Halpert and receptionist Pam Beesly. It's obvious to everyone, including each other, that they are the perfect match and totally in love, but Pam is engaged to Roy who works in the warehouse.
Jim's nemesis and the recipient of most of his pranks is Dwight Schrute, who claims to be the Assistant Regional Manager but is actually the Assistant to the Regional Manager. Dwight is both a science fiction geek, a beet farmer, and the best performing salesperson in Scranton.
The supporting cast includes warehouse manager Darryl Philbin, dim witted accountant Kevin Malone, corporate HR person Toby Flenderson, flighty customer service rep Kelly Kapoor, temp Ryan Howard, creepy Creed Bratton, uptight accountant Angela Martin, office grump Stanley Hudson, lusty Meredith Palmer, Phyllis Vance and husband Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration, office know it all Oscar Martinez, and Nard Dog Andy Bernard.
